Describes more than 1,200 birds, specifying each bird's range, habitat, size, plumage, habits, and behavior Editorial Reviews From Library Journal "Definitive reference" is overstated, but this is an accurately written and handsomely illustrated survey of the world's birds. It is in three sections: a short summary of basic bird biology; an illustrated catalog of about 1200 species representing all living orders and families; and a checklist of all 9300-plus currently recognized species. Both the catalog and the checklist use standard taxonomic arrangement. The entries in the catalog, the heart of the book, include name, range, habitat, size and a concise but clear and not overly technical account of the birds' biology; all species are illustrated in color. There is an index of names. Recommended as a useful, though not essential, addition to popular science collections. See also The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Ornithology , reviewed on p. 132.--Ed.
