Language: English.

This book provides a comprehensive exploration in the fundamental physics of the non-relativistic atom in terms of its symmetries. The book gives a complete treatment of the dynamical symmetries of the H atom and the use of these symmetries to determine energy levels and analytically calculate the first order radiative Lamb shift using group theory. Understanding radiative shifts is critical since measurement of the Lamb shift led to the development of quantum electrodynamics. The harmony between the mathematics and the physics is emphasised throughout the book. Through the lens of symmetry, it is possible to elucidate key features of the H atom is a way that is elegant, simple, and focuses on fundamentals.

Understanding the hydrogen atom has been the gateway to the development of quantum physics for over 100 years. Both quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics were discovered by exploring the spectra of the H atom. This book outlines the key mathematical and physical behavior of the H atom, and its historical context, that led to these discoveries. The quantum behavior is related to the corresponding classical behavior and to the harmonic oscillator, the other fundamental central force system. Understanding the H atom, the most basic physical system, is a gateway to understanding much of quantum theory.

Editorial Reviews Review "This volume The Hydrogen Atom: The Doorway to Physics, its Symmetries and Radiative Shift by Professor G Jordan Maclay provides an excellent and very enjoyable outline on modern aspects of the quantum theory of the Hydrogen Atom and corresponding classical counterparts, its symmetries and radiative corrections from a new and original perspective, as well as intriguing historical aspects. Reading this book will be a real delightful experience for both the experienced researcher and the graduate student."

Roberto Passante University of Palermo, Italy

"This very readable book approaches the theory of the hydrogen atom based in large part, but not exclusively, on group-theoretical methods. More than half of the book focuses on radiative level shifts and effects of vacuum field fluctuations from various perspectives, including the symmetries involved in a thorough understanding of the hydrogen atom. The range of topics covered, and the emphasis on symmetries and fundamental physics, make this book a refreshing contribution that should appeal to experts and non-experts alike."

Peter Milonni University of Rochester About the Author G Jordan Maclay is the Chief Scientist at Quantum Fields LLC, a research organization he founded in 1999 after retiring from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prof. Maclay received his PhD from Yale in theoretical quantum physics and has done research in this field for 40 years, primarily in Casimir forces and vacuum fluctuations. He was on the faculty at University of Illinois at Chicago for 20 years, doing research on the effects of vacuum fluctuations and Casimir forces on microelectromechanical systems and in chemical microsensors. Before that he held a post-doctoral appointment at Argonne National Laboratory. He worked in molecular spectroscopy before entering graduate school. He has about 100 journal publications and eighteen patents. He edited the book Symmetries in Quantum Mechanics and co-edited the book Vacuum Fluctuations.
