He graduated as a medical doctor from the School of Medicine of the Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua. Dr. Irigoyen worked among the Tarahumaras for a long time: about 1 year in Cerocahui, 4 in Norogachi, one in Samachique and one in Guachochi (+multiple incursions from Chihuahua or Guachochi) He then was the Coordinator for the Center of Regional Studies at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua for 3 years. He did his residency training in Psychiatry at the School of Medicine of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Since 1987 settled in McAllen, Texas.Dr Irigoyen is the American Psychiatric Association 2018 George Tarjan MD Memorial Award recipient.
