Basic Trial Advocacy – 10th Edition by Peter L. Murray is a foundational guide for anyone serious about mastering courtroom litigation. Widely regarded as a classic in trial techniques and trials, this comprehensive volume delivers a systematic, skills-based approach to trying cases before judges and juries. Developed from decades of teaching at Harvard Law School and the University of Maine School of Law, as well as through extensive work with national trial advocacy programs, this authoritative text provides both law students and practicing attorneys with the tools needed to build persuasive, ethical, and strategically sound cases. Unlike surface-level advocacy manuals, Basic Trial Advocacy focuses on the “why” behind effective trial techniques. Understanding not just what to do—but why it works—empowers developing lawyers to apply principles thoughtfully and adaptively in real courtroom settings.

Comprehensive Coverage of the Trial Process

This 10th Edition walks readers step-by-step through every major phase of trial preparation and courtroom performance:

  • Structure examinations to control narrative flow
  • Use objections strategically without alienating juries
  • Maintain professionalism and credibility before the court
